特別展「岡本太郎 アートの夢〜陶壁・陶板・21世紀のフィギュア造形」

　岡本太郎（1911-1996）は自身の創作について、「一般大衆にじかにぶつかる、社会に開かれた芸術を実現したい」と記しています。1952年に陶壁を手掛けた岡本は、芸術が人々の身近にあることの大切さを述べています。≪犬の植木鉢≫で量産を試み、信楽で手掛けた≪坐ることを拒否する椅子≫では、人と直に触れ合うアートの在り方を探っています。
 　戦後復興期からは建築家・デザイナー・芸術家により建築陶器は、人とアートとの結びつきを強めていきました。岡本太郎が信楽で手掛けた大阪万博の≪太陽の塔≫〈黒い太陽〉は、多くの人々の記憶に刻まれています。こうした陶産地と岡本太郎の出会いのなかで育まれた技術は、大塚オーミ陶業株式会社の美術陶板などの仕事に継承されています。
  また、岡本太郎は「彫刻はより肉体的であり直接的で実体がそこにあるモノの強さを持つ」とも記しています。アニメ・マンガのキャラクター造形は21世紀の大衆が求めたアートのひとつといえるでしょう。デジタル技術の進歩で、クリエイターの世界観を再現した高精度なフィギュアが生まれています。
 本展では〈芸術の大衆化〉をテーマに、近代の建築装飾陶器、パブリックアートや量産品のデザインを手掛けた岡本太郎らの作品を紹介。またフィギュア造形の世界や壁画の可能性を併せて取り上げつつ、岡本太郎のアートの夢、21世紀のその先をたどります。

Taro Okamoto (1911–1996), regarding his creations, once stated that art should be accessible to everyone in society; it should directly impact the general public. Okamoto, who worked on tile murals in 1952, reiterated the importance of people’s accessibility to art. He experimented with mass production of artworks with his Dog Shaped Flower Pot while also exploring the form of artworks people can interact with through Chair Refusing to Seat Anyone, which he created in Shigaraki.
 Since the period of postwar rehabilitation, architectural ceramics have made people feel more and more connected to art through the work of architects, designers, and artists. The Tower of the Sun, which was designed by Okamoto for Expo ’70 held in Osaka, is certainly one such work etched in many people’s memories. The techniques developed for the production of the “black sun” on the back side of the Tower—which took place in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s oldest pottery regions—have been utilized in the reproduction of masterpiece paintings on ceramic panels by Otsuka Ohmi Ceramics Co., Ltd.

Okamoto also expressed his idea that sculpture is more physical and direct and has the strength of something tangible. One could argue that character modeling in anime and manga is a form of art that the people of the 21st century have craved. Advances in digital technology have enabled the creation of figures with a high level of accuracy that faithfully reflect the creators’ views of the world.

Themed on the “popularization of art,” this exhibition features works by Taro Okamoto and other artists, who designed public artworks, mass-produced products, and modern architectural and ornamental ceramics. The audience will also experience the world of figure creation and the potential of murals, as the exhibit traces Taro Okamoto’s visions for art and looks beyond the 21st century.
